Riviera
Opatija is settled at the eastern coast of the Istrian
peninsula in the Bay of Kvarner. It occupies a 25
km long narrow coastal zone underneath the slopes
of Učka. Sheltered from the cold winds and sunk in
lush Mediterranean evergreen vegetation of Laurel,
Pinion and Cyprus trees.
In addition
to Opatija, the Riviera encompasses a string of coastal
townlets with tourist locations extending along the
coast; Volosko,Opatija, Ičići, Ika, Lovran, Medveja
and Moščenićka Draga. Almost the entire length of
this scenic coastal stretch is connected with a pedestrian
seaside promenade, passing through many beaches and
gardens.
Next
in the string is 160 yrs old town of Opatija, the
queen of adriatic tourism. In the year 1844 the leading
citizen of Rijeka, a merchant named Higin Scarpa,
built villa Angiolina near the benedictine abbey of
St. Jacob, in the idyllic setting of winter green
vegetation. Since those days Opatija has become winter
and health resort for the elite society of Europe's,
royal families, and man
y
notable people. Here stayed the emperors Wilhelm II
and Franz Joseph, as well as famous artists like the
composer Gustav Mahler and Isadora Duncan. Today,
Opatija welcoms you with her beautiful gardens, scenic
shores and sandy beaches. Along with its parks and
romantic seaside pomenades, it offers top cultural
events at one of the most beautiful open-air theatres
in europe.
As we continue our walk toward Lovran, we arrive to
Ičići. Only 2 km away from Lovran, having served as
a port for charcoal and wood transport from Učka in
the Middle Ages, and afterwards as a sanatorium (for
respiratory diseases), now is one of the nicest ACI
marinas in the Adriatic. It has more than 300 berths,
and has been awarded the environmental award of "European
Blue Flag", just as a beach which lays nearby.
At the beach you can find many sport and recreational
activities, like beach volleyball, renting pedal boats,
boats, windsurfing, water- skiing, childrens playgrounds,
and rich gastronomic offerings.
The
promenade is taking us on to Ika, an old fishing village.
Tourism here has been developing since 20th years
of last century. This little town is decorated with
lovely little port and natural beach.
Continuing from Lovran
to the west, at only 800 m from our pansion we will
come upon the town of Medveja. A large natural pebble
beach, one of the most beautiful in the bay, has formed
here on the delta of the creek which flows from Učka
Mountain.
Finally, we arrive to Mo±čenička Draga, a little town
with a 2 km long pebble beach, with a port, where
fishing boats are docking daily. A hiking trail leads
us to the 1396 m high Učka, passing through
villages and hamlets full of vestiges of antiquity
and Middle Ages. This entire zone abounds with trails
and narrow roads leading from these villages to the
shore.
One of them is taking
us over 760 steps to Moščenice, the historical settlement
of Illyrian tribe Liburnia, after which the entire
region was named. Numerous groups of tourists visit
Moščenice because of the unique views of the entire
Bay of Kvarner.
